Before the investor meeting, do the fit check.

A focused shortlist and a clear evidence trail are more useful than sending the same deck to everyone.

Know what the capital would change

Start with a milestone, not a round announcement. What will you learn or deliver with the money? What team and operating costs does that require? How long will it take? Keep a base case and a slower case so your plan does not depend on every assumption being right.

Venture funding is one option, not the definition of progress. Customer revenue, grants, and a smaller pilot may fit the business better. Each source of capital has different obligations and timelines.

Research the investor’s own material

Check geography, stage, sector, and the investor’s stated approach on its official website. Look at portfolio companies to understand the problems it has backed. Do not infer current check sizes or open applications from an old news article.

Keep a short note on why each investor fits your company and what is still unknown. Our investor resources link to first-party sites; they are starting points for research, not warm introductions or endorsements.

Prepare evidence, not just slides

Bring a clear description of the buyer and problem, what you have tested, the team’s relevant experience, and the risks you still need to resolve. Define every metric and distinguish signed customers from prospects.

Share sensitive records deliberately. A public startup profile is an introduction, not a data room. Obtain permission before sharing customer names, interview transcripts, or personal information.

Follow up with a specific next step

Ask what the investor needs to assess fit and agree on a next step. Record the conversation and follow-up date. If the answer is ‘too early,’ ask which evidence would make a future conversation useful.

Fundraising involves legal and commercial decisions. Get qualified advice on investment terms before committing; a directory listing or educational article does not replace that advice.
